Show Cause Hearing for Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr. Results in Stipulated Agreement

KOROR, PALAU – The Office of the Special Prosecutor and Defendant, Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr., (Remengesau, Jr.) came to a last-minute agreement to resolve the final payment of outstanding fines originally levied against Remengesau, Jr. in 2009 in Criminal Case 09-092 by then Associate Justice Salii, affirmed by the Palau Supreme Court Appellate Division in 2011. The Agreement accepted by the Court included receipt of bank records and supporting documents to show Remengesau, Jr. had the funds on hand to support the outstanding payments in two lump sums.

The Republic amended its request to find Remengesau, Jr. in contempt for failing to make timely monthly payments under Presiding Justice Salii’s Order of August 13, 2021. After negotiation, Remengesau, Jr. offered to make a lump sum payment of $35,000 today and a final lump sum payment of $49,350 on or before March 3, 2024. The Republic noted in Court it did not want to keep chasing Remengesau, Jr. in order to have him pay the outstanding fine imposed against  him and believed former President Remengesau, Jr. appeared sincere in agreeing to get the fine paid within the year.
